OUGD503 Responsive - Design Process 2: Studio Session 1 (Brief Analysis Task)

Find a suitable and lengthy brief - Competition rather than live brief.

Analyse

- Why I chose this brief
- What do I want to get out of the brief
- What do you want to produce, make, do in response to this brief
- What do you need to produce, make, do in response to this brief

Then

- Go through the eight questions from the session
- Come up with initial thumbnails
- Come up with contextual references
- Come up with concepts

Why have you chosen this brief?

Because I am really interested in packaging design and it is something I would love to become more confident with designing.

What do you want to get out of it?

I want to improve packaging design skills and be able to apply my ethical views to my work.

What do you want to produce, make do, in response to this brief?

I would love to come up with a really unique packaging design idea and perhaps propose another element alongside it, this could maybe be in the format of a video.

What do you need to produce, make do, in response to this brief?

Two new pack formats for Purdey's, covering both graphics and structure for Purdey's rejuvinate and natural energy drink.

What is the problem?

With the belief that wellness is a state of mind as much as a physical state, Purdey's has developed a loyal following among those who seek balance and sustainability in the way they choose to live. The problem is therefore to produce packaging designs which promote Purdey's as a brand and allow them to become more well known, but at the same time make sure they still have loyal followers.

What is the brief asking you to do about it?

The brief is asking us to create packaging designs which portray wellness and good health, but at the same time, without losing curiosity of the brand.

What is the brief trying to achieve?

More exposure.

Who will benefit?

The loyal followers who are active and on the go individuals.

What is the message?

Part of Purdey’s appeal lies in its idiosyncratic nature; so it is important that this is portrayed within my designs.

Who is the audience?

The loyal followers as well as those who are perhaps more health conscious.

How will the message be delivered?

Through how attractive and successful the packaging is.

Can you foresee any problems with the brief?

It is going to be challenging to improve their current designs, because I already quite like the designs they have for their packaging. It will also be hard to know whether to design both of the bottles with a similar style or whether to make them completely different, as the brief doesn't really specify. It will also be hard to make Purdey's more popular simply through their packaging, as they would probably need to advertise themselves in other ways to reach the wide audience they are aiming to reach. The audience is also very broad as it is everyone who wants to live a happy lifestyle which makes it hard to know which age range to target.

As the YCN briefs have been released and I have heard that a lot of people are doing the Purdey's brief, I have decided to do a different brief instead. I also feel like since I have answered the questions, and have read this particular YCN brief below, this brief is much more suited to me.

Why have you chosen this brief?

I have chosen this brief because I will be able to explore a new area within graphic design that I haven't yet explored. Although it is 3 dimensional design in some respects, like packaging design, it still requires a completely different skill set.

What do you want to get out of it?

I want to be able to learn a new creative skill.

What do you want to produce, make do, in response to this brief?

A creative calendar

What do you need to produce, make do, in response to this brief?

A creative calendar

What is the problem?

Fedrigoni need a new desk calendar for their graphic design customers.

What is the brief asking you to do about it?

Design a creative yet functional response.

What is the brief trying to achieve?

They are trying to capture the attention of the customers.

Who will benefit?

Fedrigoni and the customers.

What is the message?

Fedrigoni create fine quality papers which are functional and wonderfully expressive.

Who is the audience?

The audience is the customers.

How will the message be delivered?

The message will be delivered in the format of a calendar but this could be developed even further to become something much more striking and memorable.

Can you foresee any problems with the brief?

I think it will be hard to get an accurate feel for the company just from their website alone.
